Flowery notions of rose petal are joined by aromas of plum, cherry, cinnamon and leather. The mid palate is sweet and lush with plum and cherry flavors echoing the nose. You may notice a hint of charcoal and green tobacco on the finish. Not overly extracted or tannic, this wine shows what a delightful young wine Nebbiolo can be.

The Piemontese proverb on the Monchiero Carbone label translates to "every door has its clapper," but the symbolic meaning of the phrase is "behind every door there is a secret." For the Monchiero Carbone family, the secret is their winemaking, which began in the early 1900s when Clotilde Valente (the grandmother on the Monchiero side of the family) purchased the Monbirone vineyards with her dowry. She focused on making high-quality Nebbiolo intended for aging, something very unusual for the time. Nebbiolo is one of the great grape varieties in the world and the prince of vine-growing around the town of Alba in Piedmont. The Langhe is the area's most extensive appellation, encompassing all the other local appellations including famed Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero.
The Monchiero Carbone will show well with stews, steaks and earthy ragùs in most any form. To enjoy the wine before dinner, pair it with hors d'oeuvres that offer a rich counterbalance of fat, salt and flavor, such as figs stuffed with Gorgonzola and wrapped in bacon or my recipe for Mozzarella in Carrozza.
The only regret you will have about this wine is that it did not come in a bigger bottle.
